Below are The Reids’ selects for influential works:
We’ve been working together all our lives. Literally. Inseparable since birth, we’ve grown up as a hive mind of shared reference points and film taste. Here are some of those reference points organised into a list.
This was the first Safdie Brothers film we saw and was an amazing gateway into their extensive and inspiring DIY back catalogue and what introduced us to their brother dynamic as directors – this really galvanised us at the time, and this film is one of the reasons The Reids exists.
This film bottles the growing pains and strain on friendships young boys face during the transition from childhood to adolescence like none other we’ve seen. We found it to be tragically relatable & moving, thanks to Dhonts gentle, almost documentary style of directing and the incredible performances from the first time lead actors.
One of the all time great movies about the movies – and also one of our favourite horror movies. If you ever wanted to see Buster Keaton talk, this is your chance – alongside of course the incredible black and white cinematography from John Seitz that we’ve often referenced and an incredible leading performance from William Holden!
A true accomplishment from C&O here with a film that looks at the tar-black realities of addiction cycles. Shot with a technical intricacy that somehow never detracts from the themes and narratives, YUM is just a whirlwind – and features a rotating Snorri camera rig that C&O developed to achieve dizzying shots that spin around Thai which is just sick. It’s a masterpiece.
Much has been written about this video, it’s just timeless elegance and photographic beauty. A big tonal and stylistic influence.
We’d never seen anything like this video at the time – it was a groundbreaking visual feat and conceptual approach for the tune. Similar to YUM – it’s just a very complete and thorough execution of an idea.
This video from Aisultan is, in our opinion, an example of the perfect marriage of visuals and music. It’s f*cking beautiful & haunting in a way very few music videos are. Also the photography is so restrained and tasteful – wildly good.
We gotta shout out one of our favourite artists and a fellow brother directing duo. Biscuit Town is a gorgeous piece of world building that really influenced some of the videos we made for the band LEGSS a while back. Hat tips!
Oh to make a film like this for Nike again now.
Had this on loop when it came out. Sumptuously made and a really fucking fun concept for a product launch film with a bit of bite to it! Put a smile on your face.
A great demonstration of what can be done in a white psych with the right idea and some epic, epic choreography. All the performers in this nail it, and the line at the end is an all time BBH classic. Golden era ad making.
