LXV — Alex Fischman Cárdenas
Alex Fischman Cárdenas is a Peruvian director, repped by Greenpoint Pictures, specializing in narrative, commercial, and documentary films.

Below are Alex’s selects for influential works:

Film
Canoa: A Shameful Memory by Felipe Cazals
Mexico
1976

Canoa did something different back when it was released, and the movie still feels different today. A mixture of documentary, narrative, and journalistic segments, It’s a very simple but brutally powerful story told with a style that allows for glimpses across this tragedy’s different points of view.

Film
Talk to Her by Pedro Almodóvar
Spain
2002

Javier Camara really brings this movie home. He gives so much compassion and empathy to a character that is later revealed to have committed a monstrous act. I left this movie feeling uncomfortable, shaken, and moved.

Film
Mother by Bong Joon-ho
South Korea
2009

Bong Joon-Ho made a thrilling and devastating noir about a mother doing everything possible to prove her son’s innocence. I love this movie because Bong keeps pushing the idea of what a mother is capable of doing for her son. He just pushes and pushes until…

I love this movie, and it was one of my main inspirations when I did my latest short film, ‘Ovejas y Lobos.’

Music Video
‘If You Say The Word’ Radiohead by Kasper Häggström
United Kingdom
2021

I love the slowed-down pace of this piece. It makes it all the more weird, funny, and disturbing.

Music Video
‘Weight of Spring’ The White Birch by Erika Calmeyer
Norway
2017

The visuals go so well with the song. Each little shot is its own world. It is filled with so much life in the details that surround all of the compositions. I feel like I want to cry when I watch this video.

Music Video
‘Sweatpants’ Childish Gambino by Hiro Murai
United States
2014

It’s claustrophobic, surreal, funny, and tense. The way it escalates is so creepy to watch, and it really pays off with the dinner reveal.

Short Film
Fauve by Jérémy Comte
Canada
2018

Fauve is a narrative short film, and I think it’s my favorite. There are a ton of great ones, but I saw this a while ago and still think about it to this day. The narrative is so simple, so small. It starts out fun and playful, but it only makes the ending that much more traumatic.

Documentary
Murderball by Henry-Alex Rubin & Dana Adam Shapiro
United States
2005

One of my favorite documentaries. The cast of real people is phenomenal, and it’s such a fun watch. It does what I love about documentaries: It shows me a world within ours that I would have never known and gives these athletes a voice to tell their perspective to the world.

Campaign
‘Detail’ Nikon by Pantera
France
2021

I like this commercial because it plays to the greatest strength of a commercial: it communicates a feeling through a unique Point of View in just a few seconds. This commercial excels at showing the feeling of love through the unique POV of details and dimples.
