Beltrán Gonzalez & Louis direct ‘9.807’ for SHON MOTT.

Evasion as a meditation. Defining the space between thoughts & being. A walk through white ranges & pale blue skies.

Filmed in Empuriabrava, Barcelona.

Words from Beltrán & Louis below.

Let’s jump straight into the sky dive.

Beltrán: I have been jumping for a couple years, so before starting pre-production we had an idea of the possibilities; free-fall time, choreography and meteorological conditions. It was interesting for us to match a day with a layer of clouds to show an ephemeral landscape, normally unnoticed in our daily life.

The intention was to make a connection/inspection of the other subject.

Execution consisted of various ground rehearsals where Louis and I staged the stunts. The intention was to make a connection/inspection of the other subject.

The camera was the tercer member of the choreography as it was carried by a professional skydiver — getting closer when inspecting the subject, rotating.

What can you say about collaborating with SHON MOTT’s Creative Director, Kiko Buxo Genero?

Beltrán: Working with Kiko is great as we have a close relationship. He’s very open and puts a lot of trust in young people, I admire that a lot and I feel really comfortable proposing personal projects.

In the case of this film, because of my background in skydiving I was quite obsessed with materializing images from the sky and the meditation that free fall evokes.

I’m interested in how you connect the two scenes, both in a conceptual and technical sense.

The spaces are connected by the breath of the girl. The movie proposes how we could transport ourselves to a different context that has a real effect on our physical condition. Just a slight current of air from a fan could be the spark, as reflected in the movie.

Technically, the effectiveness of the link relies on a delicate craft on the sound mix, which was possible thanks to talented Rémy Monti, the editor and composer of the film.

What are you reading at the moment?

Louis: ‘Nino dans la nuit’ by Simon Johannin.
