Valentina Khodnevich is a film director and video artist based in London.

Below are Valentina’s SELECTS:

A/V Installation
Fly Paper by Kahlil Joseph
2017

I love telling this story, by the way. The day that changed my life was about five years ago, at The X Store exhibition at 180 The Strand, London. Where for the first time I saw Kahlil Joseph’s short film “Fly Paper” and instantly fell in love with his work. His ability to weave images, sound, and space together is his gift. Since then I always wanted to work in film and mixed media art.

Music Video
‘Poem about the Motherland’ Husky by Igor Klepnev
2018

I love the simplicity and authenticity of this music video. You can clearly tell that Klepnev is a photographer by the way he frames each shot, transforming old buildings, horizons, and people into striking shapes and lines. It’s a truly inspiring example of a simple concept executed flawlessly in a music video.

Music Video (Short)
I Am Easy To Find by Mike Mills
2019

‘I Am Easy to Find’ is simply a story from one person’s life told in 26 minutes, but it’s incredibly engaging to watch. You’ll find yourself wanting to spend more and more time with the main character. It feels like there is a deep connection with her after only a few minutes of watching.

Film
Khrustalyov, My Car! by Aleksei German
1998

This film pulls you into a chaotic yet strangely poetic world, where every frame is rich with tension and meaning. It leaves you wanting to rewatch it, go into researching meanings for set design and dialogues, those little hints in the frame that German left there. A true masterpiece!

Campaign
‘Never Say No to Panda’ by Ali Ali
2010

Just Panda loses it if you don’t pick her brand. Always makes me laugh. One day, I’d love to bring this kind of humour into my commercial work.

Film
Happy as Lazzaro by Alice Rohrwacher
2018

Oh, this film! I always say that part of a director’s and writer’s work is to study people. Everyone I meet leaves an impression on me, changing me in small ways. Alice’s film truly changed me, and maybe will change you. Beauty lies in the perspective of the viewer.
