XCVI — Helena Ganjalyan
Helena Ganjalyan is a Warsaw-based director, choreographer, and actress working across film, commercials, and music videos.

Below are Helena’s SELECTS:

Film
Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni
1999

This is the very first film I remember watching—I must have been around eight years old. I came home from school and it happened to be playing on TV. I was instantly drawn in, sat on the floor as if hypnotized, and watched until the end. I’ll never forget that moment and the emotions it stirred.

Film
Uncut Gems by Josh & Benny Safdie
2020

Raw and relentless. Everything works here—the frenetic editing, Adam Sandler’s performance, the suffocating pace. A true masterpiece of controlled chaos.

Film
Songs from the Second Floor by Roy Andersson
2001

Roy Andersson is one of a kind—both in his features and his early commercials. His absurdist lens strikes right at the essence of being human.

Documentary
The Wolfpack by Crystal Moselle
2015

I came across this documentary while researching my debut feature. It’s a fascinating portrait of an attempt to build a “utopia” in confinement—both terrifying and mesmerizing. Moselle masterfully balances a slightly stylized approach with a raw, observational portrait of her subjects’ reality.

Film
Synecdoche, New York by Charlie Kaufman
2009

I was blown away when I first saw it—it felt like nothing else before. I adore Kaufman’s work: surreal, layered, and deeply personal.

Dance
Le Salon by Peeping Tom Company
2004

With a background in choreography and theatre, I had to include a piece of dance theatre. Le Salon is breathtaking—the way Peeping Tom fuse virtuosic movement with unique concepts, raw emotion, and bold imagery expands my sense of what the human body can express. I love how they balance abstraction with pure, unfiltered feeling.

Film
Magnolia by Paul Thomas Anderson
2025

I won’t be original here—PTA is a master. The nuanced characters he brings to life, the rhythm and unpredictability of his scripts, and the emotional scope of Magnolia (and his other films) have influenced me profoundly. He has this rare ability to surprise me every single time.

Film
Down by Law by Jim Jarmusch
1986

Just to mention one, but Jarmusch in general was an early favorite. His minimalism, dry humor, and poetic eye for the everyday left a deep mark on me. I admire his courage and the consistency of his creative voice.

Documentary
Fire of Love by Sara Dosa
2022

The most beautiful film about love I’ve ever seen. The 16mm footage, with its extraordinary color and texture, is sublime. Beyond the imagery, the film captures what love means to me: total acceptance, and the courage to walk your own path together.
