Amara Abbas is an American Pakistani filmmaker currently based in NYC.

Below are Amara’s SELECTS:

Film
Incendies by Denis Villeneuve
2010

A masterpiece. The kind of film that you only need to watch once that stays with you forever. An incredible story with perfect pacing. A piece of filmmaking that has always inspired me.

Film
Play Time by Jaques Tati
1968

I’m genuinely amazed by the world this film creates. The set, the detail in styling and color tell us a story without saying a word.

Film
A Prophet by Jaques Audiard
2010

One of my all-time favorites. An underdog’s rise of innocence to power, where knowledge becomes his greatest weapon. One of the films that made me want to pick up a camera.

Film
Persona by Ingmar Bergman
1967

A special kind of film, unsettling and stunning. The master of framing faces — often imitated, never duplicated.

Film
Taste of Cherry by Abbas Kiarostami
1997

A confrontation of death that feels so direct in a way I had never seen on screen. I always think of this quote when I think of Kiarostami: “Some films make me doze off in the theater, but the same films have made me stay up at night, wake up thinking about them and thinking of them for weeks.” His films do just this – stay with you forever.

Campaign
‘Ride’ Wrangler by Jonathan Glazer
2002

Strange and beautiful. Feels like a memory you dreamed – surreal and nostalgic at once.

Film
Children of Men by Alfonso Cuaron
2006

Hard to believe this came out 20 years ago, it feels like it saw the future coming. The world-building is so rich, every detail tells us something. There’s so much beauty in how it holds on to hope even in darkness.

Short Film
Fauve by Jeremy Comte
2018

Great short films are rare, this one’s unforgettable. Raw, tense, beautifully restrained. Perfect casting and locations. One of the strongest shorts I’ve seen.

Music Video
‘Hate or Glory’ Gessaffelstein by Fleur & Manu
2013

Hypnotic, perfectly cut. Incredible mood, incredible music. A classic.
