CI — Omar Jones
Omar Jones is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles.

Below are Omar’s SELECTS:

Some of these works have directly shaped how I create. Others just remind me why I love making things in the first place. I hope something I make one day gives someone else that same feeling.

Music Video
‘Windowlicker’ Aphex Twin by Chris Cunningham
1999

Everything Chris Cunningham has done is genius, but this one is the blueprint for me. Dark, funny, and disturbing in the best way.

Music Video
‘Come Into My World’ Kylie Minogue by Michel Gondry
2002

It’s hard to pick one Gondry moment, but ‘Come Into My World’ is a north star for me when I think about clever motion control execution. I love how Gondry can build a perfect concept and then casually break his own rules just because he can.

Music Video
’99 Problems’ Jay-Z by Mark Romanek
2004

Romanek’s work always feels timeless and has a real swag to it.

Music Video
‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ Solange by Solange & Alan Ferguson
2016

The video stopped me in my tracks when I saw it for the first time. Solange’s detail for styling, color blocking, choreography, and architecture is unrivaled.

Short Film
‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ Kendrick Lamar by Kahlil Joseph
2016

I admire how Kahlil Joseph expresses the Black experience, especially the darker tones, in a dreamy, surreal way that still feels honest and true. One of the greatest visual love letters to any city ever made.

Anime
Killer Bee vs. Sasuke in ‘Naruto: Shippuden’ by Studio Pierrot
2003

I grew up on anime and I’m still inspired by world-building, character development, and sound design. There are a lot of great anime fights, but this one’s a favorite. Having context of the story makes the scene go harder but I still marvel at the fight choreography and animation style. Also, Killer Bee is one of the coldest Black anime characters ever.

Film
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story by Rawson Marshall Thurber
2004

If you can dodge traffic, you can dodge a ball.

Film
Mad Max: Fury Road by George Miller
2015

“What a lovely day!” A masterclass in overstimulation. The buildup to the sandstorm chase leading into Nux watching the other War Boys get flung around by a sand tornado…. The score, the editing, the color, the sound—top 5.

Documentary
Pedal by Peter Sutherland
2001

A deep dive into the subculture of bike messengers. The part where Jesus describes making deliveries in the “devil’s building” kills me every time.
