Below are Mashie’s SELECTS:
Changed my life. Every frame is so controlled and beautiful, yet it makes me feel deeply uncomfortable. I love the sterile mise-en-scène and the isolation of someone who seems increasingly alien inside her own life.
The colours are perfect, and I love how the sets are almost as strange as she is. I love women who are allowed to be sexual, difficult, funny and genuinely weird, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is all of those things in this movie.
I wish I made this movie. I love women who are allowed to be dangerous and actually have fun being dangerous; Bridget is manipulative, sexual, selfish and terrifying, and nobody makes her apologize for it.
One of the first music videos that made me think I wanted to make films; I love the weirdness and how one bizarre image somehow leads perfectly into another without needing explanation. It’s quite trippy that I’m now represented by CANADA, it’s a full circle fan-girl moment!
Genuinely TV comic gold and offensively smart. A perfect show. I’d link my favourite clips, but I don’t think any of them are appropriate for this article.
I am completely hypnotized by Kate Moss’s wet hair in this, and I genuinely don’t understand why. She looks intimate, feral, beautiful and slightly sick, and I love images that make me feel something before I can explain what I’m looking at.
This has basically everything I love: mirrors, doubles, female rivalry, sexuality, body horror, ambition, and a woman completely losing her mind. I love that as she becomes more unhinged, the filmmaking goes with her until everything beautiful is also scary and everything scary is somehow sexy.
I love the choreography between the camera, Dua and all these men orbiting her while she’s strangely isolated in the middle of it. It’s glamorous and sexy but also slightly nightmarish, which is basically my favourite combination.
This definitely is the one that convinced me to become a filmmaker. The saturated colour, step-printing and movement make the city feel alive while everyone inside it seems completely alone. The characters are obsessive and strange, doing irrational little things because they’re lonely or in love.
