Our Selects: Series is an interview format we run with film and video directors. We ask directors to name key and influential works under the film, campaign, and music video categories. The series aims to broaden horizons of reference and acknowledge works from the back catalog.

Christmas On The Moon (2019)

Directed by Lado Kvataniya

Below are Lado’s picks and what he had to say:

Essential: Films

I love film, course I do, I wouldn’t be writing this if I didn’t. So picking three essentials is tough. In order to narrow down the huge shortlist I needed to figure out why I’m selecting them. In the end I went for the ones that just made me want to make films, albeit for differing reasons.

The Thing (1982)

Directed by John Carpenter

My mother is a big fan of horror films, so I watched all the worst films of the 90s, when I didn’t even go to school. This film has opened for me a genre film, which in my opinion is the most difficult.

Andrei Rublev (1966)

Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky

I just had no words after this movie. I realised that I wanted to try directing.

8½ (1963)

Directed by Federico Fellini

I would say that this Fellini is my teacher. He teaches that you can and should create your own unique worlds, where only your rules will be. It is worth listening to him

Memories of Murder (2003)

Directed by Bong Joon-ho

Asian cinema is unique – they interfere with paradoxical genres and it is very difficult to understand what you are watching(comedy or horror), but you cannot tear yourself away.

Essential: Music Videos

‘Hell Yeah’ Rag’N’Bone Man (2014)

Directed by Truman & Cooper

I am a storyteller by nature and first of all I need a story and its solution. In this video, everything is good for me, but the form itself is simply very impressive.

‘The View From The Afternoon’ Arctic Monkeys (2010)

Directed by W.I.Z.

Every time I look at this clip, I understand that you don’t need a lot of money to make a great story, because the most important thing is concept.

‘Rabbit In Your Headlights’ UNKLE (1998)

Directed by Jonathan Glazer

Jonathan Glazer is an inspiration to many. This little film that talks about all of humanity. Every time I review it and discover something new.

Essential: Commercials

‘Human Technology’ BERETTA (2014)

Created by Ancarani Studio

I like it when advertising goes beyond the bounds of what it needs to just sell something in the forehead. This story is the birth!

‘Undeniable’ SickKids VS (2016)

Directed by Mark Zibert

This is a company that is solved according to all templates and standards, but it is the theme that makes it unique to me.

‘100’ Leica (2014)

Directed by Jones+Tino

You can watch it forever – revived canonical photos.
